Dog-o-Lanterns

I'm not the kind of dog owner who dresses her dogs in clothes or carries them around in a handbag, but I do occasionally get cheesy. Case in point: these dog-o-lanterns, one for Bishop and one for Martha, which my husband and I carved at a recent gathering with friends.

Martha's face has already collapsed, because we didn't take Martha Stewart's advice and seal the cuts with petroleum jelly.

See also the adorable jack-o-lanterns made by Risa (one of my only blog readers--hello!) and Matt.

Also, randomly: my publisher, Harper Perennial, was highlighted in an interesting recent article on Salon.com: http://www.salon.com/2011/10/16/the_harper_perennial_model/singleton/. I get a very brief shout-out as a "new-breed Southern author" (hmm), and my book cover is peeping behind the shoulder of another book in the graphic, not unlike the way I end up appearing in most group photos.

The dog-o-lanterns are very impressive. I admit I was skeptical when I saw the templates, but you have some mad carving skillz. Do you think Martha or Bishop recognized their own likeness?

Those really are amazing. So far, ours are holding up okay, even with the rain. Let's try to do Hester next year -- or a really big pumpkin with all three dogs' faces together? How incredible would that be?

Also, the Salon story you linked to is really interesting; did that account of HarperPerennial's marketing and rebranding match your experience, too?

Thanks, Matt and Risa! I'm glad your lanterns are holding up. Bishop still looks good, but Martha's getting scary.

Risa, that's an interesting question about HP. I don't have anything to compare my experience to except working part-time in publicity at a university press. I do think they strive to be innovative with marketing efforts, and they're very tied into social media: blogs, twitter, facebook, all of that. It didn't escape my notice that a lot of their authors are "young" (in that relative publishing sense).

I'm very jealous of your pumpkin carving skills. I tried to do the haunted house pattern on my pumpkin last year and everyone thought it was a tetris move.

Oh my gosh, Holly! I am so impressed with your dog-o-lanterns! (I love Risa's jack-o-lanterns, too!) The last time I tried to carve a jack-o-lantern, the creature's mouth imploded and it became a very unfortunate looking toothless wonder--but frightening, as it seemed quite like it could gum a person to death!

Anyway, I hope y'all have a lovely holiday!

Jennifer, hello! I think the key to the pumpkins was drinking bourbon while working on them--you should try that next time.

We need to get together for lunch or coffee or something soon.
